FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STATE JOBS LISTING

How do I apply?

Follow the instructions in the bulletin for the job. When applying for jobs in the Skilled or Professional service you must file an MS-100 Application for Maryland State Employment. You may not submit a resume as a substitute for the MS-100 unless the bulletin instructs you to do that.  For jobs OTHER than skilled and professional service, there may be other requirements, such as a resume.  The application requirements and the person to whom you send your information may be different for each bulletin.  Be sure to follow the instructions that are on the bulletin that is of interest to you.

Where do I apply?

Send your applicant information to the name and address on the job listing and bulletin. If you send it anywhere else (including to DBM) your materials may be delayed and this might result in your application being too late.   Please do NOT send applications via e mail to marylandgov@doit.state.md.us, as this may result in your application not arriving at the correct agency on time.

There are 7 categories (detailed service category information) of employment listed on this page. They are:

  • Skilled and Professional Service - Positions with full benefits (sick, annual and personal leave, holidays, retirement, health and related benefits); in the Merit System
  • Special Appointments, Management and Executive Service - Positions with full benefits; but employment at the pleasure of the hiring authority
  • Contractual Positions - Positions with no benefits or, whatever benefits are offerred by the hiring agency, employment at the pleasure of the hiring authority
  • Department of Transportation - MDOT has their own personnel system. These bulletins are posted as a courtesy to MDOT but DBM does not accept applications for these jobs. Follow the instruction on their bulletins in order to apply for jobs in MDOT.

What do these terms mean?

Position Specific Recruitment or PSR - means that a recruitment is being held for one specific position in a specific agency. If that job class is used for other positions, you will need to apply for those jobs separately. Special additions to the normal Minimum Qualifications, called Selective Qualifications may apply for position specific recruitments. You must meet both the Minimum and Selective Qualifications in order to qualify for that job.

Limitations on Selection, Conditions of Employment - This means that a specific job requires you to be available for work under some specific conditions such as a geographical area, time of day or that a job requires travel, driving, etc. You must indicate your willingness to meet these limitations or conditions in order to qualify.

OC or Open and Continuous - This means that applications are always accepted for that job class in order to fill expected or recurring vacancies.

Open Until Filled - This means that applications will be accepted for a job until that job is filled. These jobs may close suddenly, without a specific closing date.

Closing Date - This is the last day on which you can apply for a job.

How Do I  Find Out What I May Qualify For?

The brochures below give information about selected job classes in the Skilled Service based on specific levels of education or work experience that are required in the Mimimum Qualifications for those job classes. Compare your education and experience history to the requirements of the minimum qualifications of the listed position. If you have questions call our representative at 410-767-4850.

Important Note - These brochures are NOT lists of jobs for which the State is currently recruiting. We only accept applications for job classes in which there are vacant positions that are to be filled. Those job classes are listed in the Current Recruitment Information. The job classes listed in these documents give general information about the types of positions that exist in State government.
