Income Maintenance Specialist I

EXAMINATION FOR:   INCOME MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST I
   
SALARY:  $27,876 - $43,647   SALARY GRADE 10

(Applications submitted for the examination for this classification are accepted year round. Approved candidates will be placed on an eligible list used to fill any possible current or future vacancies in the Local Departments of Social Services.)

POSITION DUTIES:  Determine the eligibility of applicants for public assistance programs and review client information for continued eligibility.  Under close supervision, employees in this class interview clients to explain programs, verify information and determine category of eligibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for testing for this classification, you must possess the following…

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
     
Experience: None.

NOTES:

1. Applicants may substitute public contact experience involving negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling data, performing analysis of data, writing correspondence, and completing mathematical or legal tasks on a year for year basis for the required education.

2. Applicants may substitute possession of an associate of arts degree in Income Maintenance and two years of experience involving public contact and performance of support functions directly related to income maintenance program operations for the required education.
 
3. These requirements are established by the Income Maintenance Administration by authority provided in Section 1A of Article 88A of the Annotated Code of Maryland.  The Department of Human Resources does not have authority to accept substitutions or equivalents.

SELECTION PROCESS: 
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be admitted to the examination for this classification.  It is essential that you give complete and accurate information on your application.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment list categorized as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified.  The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

EXAMINATION: 
The examination is designed to measure the applicant’s skills, knowledge and abilities as they relate to the duties of the position.

Your application is part of the examination process. Answer each question fully and clearly. Photocopies are acceptable provided there is an original signature and copied on standard paper (8 ½" x 11"). A receipt will be mailed if a self-addressed stamped envelope is attached.

Qualifications: You must possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job. Verification will be completed by the appointing authority. If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process. Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination. Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week. You must include on your application the time you spent in such activity. You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.

Eligibility: Applicants will be notified when and where to appear for written, oral or demonstration examinations. Some examinations may consist of an evaluation of relevant training and experience. If further information is needed, notice will be sent to the candidate. Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the classification for which they apply, will not receive a ranking and their name will not appear on the eligible list.

 The attached Supplemental Questionnaire is the examination for Income Maintenance Specialist I and II.  The Application for State Employment (MS 100) will be used to determine if you meet the minimum experience and education requirements.  If your application is approved, the Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to rate job-related training and experience you may have which exceed minimum job requirements.  The answers that you provide will be objectively assessed and a score will be computed.  Your name will then be certified to the appropriate eligible list.  If your application is not approved, you will be notified by mail.

When responding to the questions, please consider experience obtained through paid and volunteer work, training and education.  Only the information supplied on the form will be evaluated.  Please do not attach additional information.

Please note that you will be required to provide detailed information to verify your answers and will be asked to explain your answers in depth if you are selected for an interview.

You must include your Social Security Number and signature on the Supplemental Questionnaire.
